Julie Koppen, owner of Greenability Weekly, first began publishing the paper version of Greenability in 2007. The bi-monthly magazine featured in-depth stories about the sustainability efforts of individuals and organizations in the Kansas City metro area. Topics ranged from organic and local food to renewable energy projects and one-of-a-kind stories — like green burials.
The magazine won numerous awards for content and sustainability efforts, including second place in the national Green America’s Better Paper Project, which considers 17,000 magazines annually for sustainability efforts. In 2015, Julie transitioned Greenability from a paper to digital format and began publishing Greenability Weekly, a free online alternative to the paid subscription and newsstand options.
Julie also serves on the Kansas City, MO Environmental Management Commission.
“At the time, I took a chance that a free, digital Greenability could reach more people. It worked! Subscriptions went from about 3,000 to 15,000, and we now can reach readers across the country.”
